1. Choose the right vehicle

Not all vehicles are suitable for driving on the beach. Four-wheel-drive is a must, as many of the island's beaches have soft sand that can quickly bog down a two-wheel-drive vehicle. Before you hit the sand, make sure your vehicle is equipped for off-road driving, with four-wheel drive and high clearance. A sturdy SUV, Jeep or truck is ideal for driving on Nantucket beaches.

1. Reduce tire pressure

Lowering your tire pressure is a must as it will improve your vehicle's traction on the sand, making it easier to drive and reducing the risk of getting stuck. The ideal tire pressure for driving on the beach is around 20 psi, but be sure to check your vehicle's manual for specific recommendations. Be sure to bring a portable air compressor (all ACK Jeeps come with one!) or tire gauge to air back up once you're back on paved roads.
