Driving on Nantucket beaches can be an exciting and adventurous experience, but it also requires a certain level of skill and knowledge. Whether you're a seasoned driver or a first-timer, these technical tips can help you navigate the island's sandy terrain with confidence and ease.

Choose the right vehicle
Not all vehicles are suitable for driving on the beach. Four-wheel-drive is a must, as many of the island's beaches have soft sand that can quickly bog down a two-wheel-drive vehicle. Before you hit the sand, make sure your vehicle is equipped for off-road driving, with four-wheel drive and high clearance. A sturdy SUV, Jeep or truck is ideal for driving on Nantucket beaches.
Reduce tire pressure
Lowering your tire pressure is a must as it will improve your vehicle's traction on the sand, making it easier to drive and reducing the risk of getting stuck. The ideal tire pressure for driving on the beach is around 20 psi, but be sure to check your vehicle's manual for specific recommendations. Be sure to bring a portable air compressor (all ACK Jeeps come with one!) or tire gauge to air back up once you're back on paved roads.
Use low gear
When driving on the beach, you must switch to low gear to maintain control of your vehicle and prevent spinning tires. Engage your vehicle's low range before hitting the sand and avoid sudden acceleration or deceleration.
Avoid sharp turns
Turning sharply on the sand can cause your vehicle to get stuck or even tip over. Instead, make wide turns and take your time navigating curves or bends in the beach.
Stay on designated trails
When driving on the beach, it's important to stick to designated trails and avoid driving on dunes or other protected areas. This helps preserve the fragile ecosystem of the beach and reduce the risk of getting stuck or damaging your vehicle.
Watch the tides
You should always check the tide schedule before heading out, and plan your route accordingly. Driving on the beach during high tide can be dangerous, as the water can quickly rise and make the sand soft and unstable. It's also important to be aware of any tidal pools or channels that may be present, as they can be deep and difficult to navigate.
Come prepared
Driving on the beach can be unpredictable, so it's important to be prepared for any situation. Bring along a shovel, tow rope, and jack in case of getting stuck or needing to change a tire. Don’t worry, we have you covered! Every ACK Jeep has all of these essentials. It's also a good idea to pack plenty of food, water, and other essentials for a day at the beach.
