Great Point Beach is one of the most beautiful and picturesque beaches on Nantucket Island, located at the western most point of the island. A true gem - there’s not really a comparison for it. With miles of pristine sand dunes and clear, turquoise waters, it's the perfect spot for a relaxing day on the beach. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your day at Great Point.

Essential Tips for a Perfect Day at Great Point Beach, Nantucket

Make sure you have the right vehicle

Driving on the beach is the best way to access Great Point, as the sandy terrain can be challenging by foot. If you don’t have a four-wheel-drive, you can rent one from us, or hire a guide for the day who will show you around. Remember to set your 4WD up properly for driving on the beach. Here are some tips.

Get a Great Point Beach sticker

Make sure you have a Great Point Beach sticker to access the beach, otherwise you’ve reached a dead end, my friend. All ACK Jeeps come with one so if you’ve rented with us - you’re all good!

Pack the essentials

Make sure you have everything you need for a day at the beach, including sunscreen, hats, towels, chairs, umbrellas and plenty of water - and any other beach gear you might need like fishing rods or beach toys. It's also a good idea to bring some dry layers.

Get there early

Great Point Beach is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, especially during peak season. To avoid the crowds and secure a prime spot on the beach, it's a good idea to get there early in the morning. The beach opens at 9am, so aim to arrive around that time or even a little earlier to beat the rush.

Bring drinks and snacks

While there are no restaurants or concessions on Great Point, you can still create your own picnic on the beach. Pack a YETI cooler with your favorite drinks and snacks, and swing by Something Natural on the way to grab some sandwiches.

Explore the dunes

Take some time to explore the dunes, which are home to a variety of plant and animal species. Just be sure to stay on designated trails and respect the fragile ecosystem of the dunes.

Gone fishing

You'll need a fishing permit to fish on Great Point. You can get one at the Nantucket Harbor Master's Office or online. The best time to fish at Great Point Beach is during the early morning or late afternoon, when the fish are most active, though check the tide charts before heading out.
